Meet The Team
Our History
Finding Inspiration in Every Evolution
The Highland Community Center is deeply rooted in our town's history. Originally established as a school for African American students, the institution took a significant step forward in 1951 with the construction of a new brick building and was renamed as the Highland School. Under the steadfast leadership of Mr. Robert Hoffman, who served as principal from 1940 to 1974, the school became a cornerstone of the community. As society evolved and integration led to the construction of a new school for all children in Mount Gilead, the Highland building found new purpose. It was thoughtfully transformed into the Highland Community Center as a non-profit entity in 1992, and now stands as a vibrant hub for all citizens, honoring its legacy of education and service while embracing a future of inclusivity and community enrichment.
